The Bum Button: A Modern Take on a Timeless Outdoor Classic
A Simple Piece of Gear That Has Stood the Test of Time
Some of the best outdoor gear isn't flashy. It doesn't require batteries, complicated instructions, or constant upgrades. It simply works.
The insulated seat cushion—often known as the Hot Seat—is one of those pieces of equipment. Since the late 1950s, hunters, bushcrafters, campers, and outdoor enthusiasts have carried one into the woods for one simple reason: comfort.
At Coalcracker Bushcraft, we wanted to honor that classic design while creating something built for today's outdoorsman. The result is the Bum Button.
The History of the Classic Hot Seat
Long before lightweight camp chairs became common, outdoorsmen needed a way to stay warm and dry while sitting on cold ground, tree stands, logs, or rocks.
The answer was surprisingly simple.
Manufacturers began producing insulated foam seat cushions covered in durable vinyl. Bright hunter orange became the signature color, making them easy to spot while providing an extra level of visibility during hunting season.
Despite the nickname, the Hot Seat never actually generated heat. Instead, its closed-cell foam worked by reflecting your body heat back toward you while insulating against frozen ground, blocking moisture, and adding comfort during long sits.
Over the decades, it became a staple in deer camps, duck blinds, turkey woods, fishing trips, and sporting events. Many outdoorsmen still have one they've carried for years.
Sometimes the simplest gear becomes the most dependable.
Meet the Coalcracker Bum Button
The Coalcracker Bum Button takes inspiration from that classic design while adding the durability, versatility, and craftsmanship you'd expect from modern bushcraft gear.
Place your bum on the seat and feel the heat.
Whether you're glassing for game, tending a campfire, waiting on a fish to bite, or taking a break on the trail, the Bum Button gives you a dry, insulated place to sit almost anywhere.
Unlike bulky camp chairs, it weighs very little, packs easily, and is always ready when you need it.
Built for Real-World Use
Every detail of the Bum Button was designed with outdoor use in mind.
Reversible Design
One side features rugged 8 oz Woodland Camo for concealment while hunting or blending into the woods. Flip it over and you'll find #10 water-resistant orange duck canvas, providing durability and high visibility whenever conditions call for it.
One seat. Two purposes.

Easy to Carry
A built-in grommet allows you to clip it to your backpack, hang it from your belt, or attach it to your gear loop so it's always within easy reach.
No digging through your pack when it's time to sit down.

The Bum Button creates a barrier between you and cold, wet, or rough surfaces. Whether you're sitting on frozen ground, damp logs, rocks, snow, or around the campfire, you'll stay warmer, drier, and more comfortable.

The Piece of Gear You'll Never Leave Behind

Instead, they'll tell you about the simple piece of equipment they use every single trip.
That's exactly what the Bum Button is.
Once you've experienced sitting on warm, dry, insulated comfort instead of cold, wet ground, you'll wonder how you ever went without it.
Place your bum on the seat and feel the heat.
